Job Description
The Senior Engineering Technologist position is the fourth level of the non-Engineering degreed technical support role. The Senior Engineering Technologist provides technical expertise to solve more complex problems, and leadership skills to manage work in a specific area of expertise, with minimal supervision. Employees in the Senior Engineering Technologist position are expected to develop advanced skills and work independently with increased latitude for un-reviewed work.
Reporting Relationships:
- This role does not have direct reports.
- This position works closely with other employees in Transmission, Distribution, Large Account Management (LAM), Billing, Payments, Community Relations, and Economic Development (ED).

- Conducts engineering and related studies to prepare thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations, and sketches with limited guidance
- Strives to continually improve job-related, technical, and professional knowledge, skills, and performance of self and junior Extra Facility Specialists (EFS)
- Works as One to develop and promote positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities within group and cross work-group boundaries
- Demonstrates effective verbal and written communication skills
- Maintains accurate records and files
- Participates in other assigned duties during emergency or storm events
- Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally
Extra Facilities:
- Be an expert in Carolinas Extra Facility (EF) processes and own the Extra Facility “philosophy.”
- Manage the “Extra Facilities” process from customer request through contractual implementation.
- Serve as LAM’s liaison with the Carolinas Customer Delivery organization for customer care, responsiveness, and execution of calculations in timely manner.
- Support of Extra Facility calculation/process support (consultation, methodology, support) and contract administration (execution, billing, follow-up, existing customer packages).
- With new customer adds on unique customer request (delivery voltage, transformation, load).
- In the form of technical guidance, working with LAM, Economic Development and Planning Engineers to secure and connect the potential customer.
- On site and/or building analysis; infrastructure availability, capacity, performance
- In serving as a liaison between Customer Delivery Planning Engineers and prospective clients (as identified by Economic Development) for site feasibility, electrical requirements, and rate analysis
- National Accounts – assist in serving as a customer liaison for site technical requirements on greenfield projects and expansions.
- Project Management and Support:
- Assist with evaluating Method of Service (MoS) options.
- In the form of technical guidance, contribute Project Management to new installations for large Commercial and Industrial expansions.
- Support LAM by identifying best delivery modifications for customers to ensure reliability and least cost for both customer and Duke Energy.
- Provide project management support and lead for large customer projects (? 2MW) interacting with Transmission and Distribution, customer’s General Contractor & electrical contractor.
- In the submission of Adequate Facilities/Facilities Adequate Request.
- (Adequate Facilities = distribution; (FAR) Facilities Adequate Request = transmission).
- Supports LAM in administering assigned Duke Energy products and services (e.g., summary billing, load research studies, etc.).
- Supports LAM in monitoring customer contracts, billing histories and initiating any needed corrective action. Provides technical support for Company Demand Side Management offers (e.g., Interruptible Service, standby generation, and PowerShare) and support for customer generation options (parallel generation, Net Metering, Small Customer Generator, etc.).
- Unassigned Customers & Escalated B&I Inquiries:
- Provide support for unassigned dormant/underutilized transmission deliveries expansions or proposed alternate MoS (i.e., conversion to Distribution service)
- Coordinate power reliability studies in conjunction with Customer Delivery – Asset Management team for large customers
- Assist in reviewing outage & event histories, and preparing information that could be presented to Customer
- Identify potential issues that could negatively impact the reliability of service, and communicate to appropriate Customer Delivery and Transmission personnel
- Assist in investigating the root cause of specific outages and power quality events for jurisdictional and National Account customers
- Understand basic rate design and how it relates to Extra Facilities (totalization, primary metering, etc.)
- Understand ED Riders, Credits, and contract terms
- Assist Rate IT (Information Technology) teams when Extra Facility factors change
- In conjunction with Account Management:
- Work with Rates and Regulations on marrying up service regulations, including contract terms.
- Consult on ‘complex’ rate analysis, rate optimization and customer modeling scenarios
- Assist LAM with answering technical questions
- Serve as a resource for qualifying customer information on expansion/contractions/load changes to Transmission and Distribution (service application, upgrades, temporary services, in/out charges, sizing & executing contracts)
- Provide go to resource for LAM, Economic Development, Customer Account Services, and Engineering on rules & service regulations, customer charging policies, standard & optional services
- Assisting with training new LAMs (Large Account Management) on technical aspects of role
Basic/Required Qualifications:
- Engineering Technologist IV
- Either 6+ years of relevant industry experience coupled with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology (or equivalent), OR 8+ years of experience and associate degree in engineering technology (or equivalent), OR 12+ years equivalent experience without a degree.
Desired Qualifications:
- Professional Engineer
- Certified Energy Manager, or Certified Energy Auditor, or Certified Demand Side Management, or Business Energy Professional or Certified Sustainable Development Professional
- Experience in the utility industry
- Understanding of basic principles of project management
- Demonstrated ability to work with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds
- Good written and oral communication skills
- Corporate office or Operation Center
- Occasional Field Visits
- Valid driver’s license
- Registration as a Professional Engineer and/or Certified Energy Manager
- Where applicable, must have obtained Bachelor of Science in Engineering
