Job Description
Overview:
An estimator is responsible for estimating the costs, resources, and time required to complete a project or provide a service. They analyze project specifications, blueprints, and other documentation to prepare accurate and competitive cost estimates. Estimators work in various industries, such as construction, manufacturing, and engineering, and their duties may vary based on the industry and specific project requirements.
Responsibilities of an Estimator may include:
- Reviewing project specifications, drawings, and other documentation to understand project requirements.
- Identifying and quantifying project costs, including materials, labor, equipment, and overhead.
- Obtaining quotes and pricing from suppliers and subcontractors.
- Analyzing historical data and industry trends to develop cost estimates.
- Collaborating with project managers, engineers, and other stakeholders to understand project scope and requirements.
- Preparing and submitting competitive bids and proposals.
- Participating in project meetings and discussions to provide cost-related insights and recommendations.
- Updating and maintaining cost databases and estimating tools.
- Monitoring and controlling project costs throughout the project lifecycle.
- Providing cost-related support and analysis to project teams and management.
- Estimators should have strong analytical, mathematical, and problem-solving skills.
- They should also have excellent communication skills to effectively collaborate with project teams and stakeholders.
- Attention to detail and the ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines are also important for this role.
- Ability to read project diagrams & construction drawings
- Strong communication skills (must be able to present estimated cost to Project Teams and Leadership)
- Experience using estimating software
Experience
- Prior estimating experience in high voltage electrical construction and/or civil work construction.
- Prior experience working at an Electric Utility in the capacity of an Estimator, Engineer, or Project Manager.
- 5-10 years of relevant experience
- Estimating software such as InEight, WinEst, Accubid, Sage, Timberline or equivalent.
- Bachelor's degree in engineering or related field, OR High School Diploma and 6-10 years of relevant estimating experience.
