Job Description

Our client who owns and operates a global portfolio of power stations is looking for a Commissioning I&C Engineer.

Key Accountabilities
  • Technical support and prompt closure of issues requiring engineering
  • Engineering design and execution for control devices
  • Health, safety and environmental compliance – personally and of works delivered
  • Planned engineering activity and project delivery (on time, to budget, to standard)
  • Commissioning and start up support related to I&C equipment
Specific Duties
  • Actively promote health and safety including oneself and others in the workplace
  • Ensure safe working procedures and the implementation for all work
  • Prepare technical specifications, datasheets and calculations for process equipment
  • Specify/select appropriate I&C equipment for use in an installation
  • Check, review and develop engineering designs, estimates, proposals, standards, and operational guides with other disciplines for operations and projects
  • Provide cost-effective solutions that minimize risk
  • Act as a technical consultant to all departments within the organization
  • Review designs and estimates associated with project proposals
  • Coordinate the safe execution of instrumentation, controls, and electrical work, as required
  • Provide guidance/review of process and related design methodology
  • Lead commissioning for I&C aspects in accordance with first gas and pre-startup safety review procedures and requirements
  • Provide supervisory and technical assistance for any onsite commissioning work
  • Support to the environmental permitting and statutory approvals for each site as it relates to controls; measurement knowledge a plus
  • Knowledge of PLC, I/O, HMI, SCADA, drives, sensors, meters, and other control systems 
  • Knowledge of engineering deliverables such as piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), cause and effect diagrams, process control narratives, safe operating limits
  • Work with procurement to engage third party contractors and vendors
  • Deliverables: drawings, calculations, specifications, data sheets, quotations, scopes of work, inspections & test plans, test documents
  • Inspect, test & verify instrumentation and controls devices and integration
  • Identify opportunities for improvement in reliability of plant operations
  • Participate in process hazard analyses (e.g. HAZOP) and Management of Change as required for project delivery and operations projects
  • Work closely with technical development teams and other organizational disciplines to develop engineering designs, standards, and guides for operational and project-based work in the following areas:
    • Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) generation and processing
    • Landfill gas power generation
    • Diesel and gas fuel power generation
    • Combined-cycle power generation
    • Piping systems and pipelines
    • Other technologies and activities as developed by the Company
Person Specification
  • Ability to work in a dynamic, changeable environment, including management of conflicting priorities in high-pressure situations

  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff, contractors and other parties

  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Computer literacy using MS Word, MS Excel and MMS systems
  • Experience in DCS Systems (e.g. DeltaV), SCADA (e.g. Ignition), and AVEVA PI systems
  • Experience in working with industry standards as it relates to I&C (e.g. safety-instrumented systems, alarm management, safety of machinery, safety critical devices)
  • Ability to demonstrate effective time management, organizational skills and disciplined work habits
  • Demonstrated initiative, motivation and high personal work standards
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Safety knowledge and leadership, particularly in Electrical Safety, Management of Change, Pre-Startup Safety Reviews, and Process Hazard Analysis
  • Travel up to 50% as required for project commissioning and operational needs
Qualifications and Experience
  • Formal engineering qualifications at engineering degree level (prefer electrical or chemical with controls experience)
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience
  • Experience in construction, 24/7 operations, and/or field environment
  • Experience in Renewable Energy, Natural Gas, Utilities, or other energy industries
  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously
  • Ability to work across time zones, as required
  • Additional experience in power generation, reciprocating gas and diesel engines, gas turbine, steam boiler/turbines, and associated plant process equipment is valuable
