Senior Instrumentation Engineer                                                

Seeking experienced engineer to oversee equipment development.  Your broad technical skills will lead the design and development of new testing instrumentation.  This includes reaching out to research and development scientists to understand needs and collaborating with metrology experts to build the instruments.  You will own the design and ensure that the instrument meets desired performance level (e.g., signal-to-noise, acquisition rate, repeatability). 

 

Key Responsibilities:
  • Apply mechanical, electrical, automation, and software engineering skills to develop automated electro-optical test benches.
  • Collaborate with R&D teams to determine equipment requirements, propose solutions, and oversee assembly and qualification.  Work with in-house experts to choose best known methods and hardware.  Verify that the equipment meets performance requirements (capability, precision, accuracy).
  • Build relationships with outside vendors for components, sub-assemblies, and complete instruments.

 

Requirements:
  • B.S. degree in Electrical / Computer Engineering, Optics, Mechanical Engineering, or a relevant technical discipline and at least 8 years of industrial experience, or M.S. or Ph.D. with at least 5 years of experience.
  • Experience with development, deployment, and support of robust testing equipment in an R&D setting, including verifying that the equipment meets requirements (e.g., repeatability, acquisition rate, etc.). Optical and electrical measurement experience preferred.
  • Track record of working with outside vendors to build equipment from concept and proposal through build and acceptance testing.
  • Experience with 2 or more of the following:  Software development (C++, Python), MATLAB, LabVIEW, optical metrology, data acquisition, optics, machine vision, PCB design, temperature/RH control, rapid prototyping, project management.

 

Preferences / Additional Skills:
  • Experience developing real-time acquisition software for machine vision cameras and / or spectrometers.
  • Knowledge of optics, optical metrology, color imaging, colorimetry, and statistical analysis.
  • Experience automating chemistry equipment (e.g., liquid handling & weighing).
