Qualifications:
  • Driving will be required for this position.

  • Ability to use computer based programs Word, Excel, Email, CMMS systems and other various programs.
  • Ability to diagnose and troubleshoot problems.


Responsibilities:
  • Based in Westerly, Rhode Island, this role you will be directly involved with the overall daily operations and general maintenance of equipment at a 3.3MGD wastewater treatment facility.
  • Position will eventually be 'on-call' once training is complete. Potential for overtime, weekend, holiday work.
  • Duties will include, but not limited to, daily rounds, laboratory analysis, record keeping, process control, sludge thickening, maintenance projects and general facility and grounds maintenance.
  • Work is performed in a safe and professional manner by following established safety, operating, and emergency response procedures.
  • Our operators participate in an “on call” rotation for plant coverage outside normal workday hours and shifts will include weekends.
  • In addition, operators will be required to respond to emergency situations and work in inclement weather as needed.
  • Willing to train a candidate who has interest.
  • Individual would take day-to-day direction from the Lead Operator or Project Manager.
  • Individual will be responsible to operate and maintain the mechanical, electrical, instrumentation and chemical systems in a wastewater treatment facility.
  • Understand the principles associated with pumps, motors, controls, valves, pipes and power sources to process wastewater.
  • Read and understand technical manuals, blueprints, drawings and service bulletins.
  • Prepare and perform preventative maintenance on all equipment, as specified.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions and communicate effectively.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Experience and functional knowledge of Word, Excel and the ability to learn moderately complex software programs.
  • Ability to work with the general public in a respectful, tactful manner. 


Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Performs any combinations of tasks pertinent to con­trolling operations of the wastewater treatment plant.
  • Operates, performs minor repairs, and maintains the wastewater treat­ment plant facility.
  • Operates pumps, engines, and generators to control and adjust flow and processing of wastewater, sludge, and effluent.
  • Monitors gauges, meters, and control panels
  • Observes variations in operating conditions and inter­prets meter and gauge readings.
  • Operates valves and gates either manually or by remote control.
  • Maintains shift log and records meter and gauge read­ings.
  • Takes samples and performs laboratory process tests and analyses when needed or on call weekend duty.
  • Performs routine mainte­nance functions and custodial duties.
  • Works safely and adheres to established safety procedures.
  • Follows written and oral instructions.
  • Ability and willingness to work on-call shifts, as requested, including being fit and able to respond to call-ins in a timely manner.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements:

The work area can involve a working environment indoors as well as outdoors, which could cause exposure to outdoor elements; proper safety attire will be required. Some areas can have loud noise, active machinery, high pressure fluid systems, electrical equipment, confined spaces, heights and depths, fumes, air borne particles, noxious gases, pathogens and various chemicals.  The use of appropriate safety equipment will be mandatory in these areas to prevent hazardous contact. 

Must be able to sit, stand, stoop, twist and bend at the waist, turn, kneel, squat, raise arms above shoulder height, grasp, reach, perform repetitive hand movements and fine coordination to work on equipment and piping, have vision sufficient to maintain collection system, have hearing in the normal range with or without correction.  In an 8-hour shift must be able to transport self across the facility, ascend and descend stair steps, lift objects up to 40 pounds from floor level to waist height, climb and work off of a ladder or scaffold and climb into and out of vehicles having high ground clearance, carry a 50 pound tool box up a flight of stairs, use arms and back to tighten and loosen nuts and bolts; work in confined spaces and wear and use appropriate safety equipment.

Preferred:
  • 1 year of experience operating a wastewater treatment facility preferred.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Adobe
  • Ability to work with diverse teams.
  • Experience in serving wastewater municipal clients.
